Different computational techniques are used in the current tools for detecting, functional annotation, and categorization of phages from environmental samples. Different training sets of samples utilised for their development, different reference sequence databases, and different stringency in dealing with host sequence contamination all influence the efficacy of these instruments.

We invite unique research publications documenting viromes from various settings, including soil, terrestrial, marine, and host-associated microbiomes, to be submitted to this Research Topic. For bacteriophage identification, classification, or characterisation, we recommend the use of multiple computational methods, or the testing of alternative parameters of the same tool. Manuscripts that describe novel computational techniques or highlight new viromics issues are encouraged to submit.
Please note that descriptive studies based purely on amplicon profiles are not considered by Phage Biology unless they are complemented by a clear hypothesis and experiments and provide insight into the microbiological system or process under investigation. If your paper includes amplicon profiles, make sure your abstract includes a clear statement about why your manuscript should be considered.
